The life of Raymond Subes

Raymond Subes (1891-1970) was a French artist who became a leading figure in 20th-century art and architecture. Born in Paris, he studied first at the École supérieure des arts décoratifs and then at the École Boulle, specializing in chasing. There, he acquired more technique, but already possessed considerable talent. He worked for Émile Robert for the rest of his career, although this was marked by the two world wars. In the first, he was wounded in action in 1914. He ended his military career as a sergeant-major in the French army. In 1958, he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was awarded various decorations, including Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur et des Beaux-Arts, as well as the Croix de Guerre. Despite the two wars, he continued his career until the end of his life, producing a wide variety of works. He worked for the shipyards, creating balustrades and stair railings for the liners Le Normandie and l'Atlantique. He also designed furniture in the Art Deco style. He lived most of his life on rue Las Cases, in the VII arrondissement, close to our offices.

Subes' imprint on his period

Raymond Subes marked his period by his talent and the grandeur of his production. In addition to creating decorative elements for ocean liners, he produced numerous decorative elements for the facades of some of the most prestigious hotels, including the Lutetia, the Georges V, the Fouquet's, the Banque de France and the Palais de Tokyo. He is highly versatile, and also works to renovate various churches. He works in a wide range of metals, and it is these (movable) works in particular that are offered for sale at auction, along with watercolor drawings produced mainly at the start of his career. Today, many of his works can be seen on the façades of Parisian palaces and buildings in the Reims region.
