Marked by an Impressionist style, Adrien Demont specialized in depictions of landscapes and city scenes. He also produced a few portraits and nudes. He uses pastel colors, often in fairly light tones, and places great importance on working with light.

The life of Adrien Demont

Adrien Demont (1851-1928) was a French Impressionist painter.

He first studied law, then joined the French Army as a volunteer during the war against Prussia.

Back in Douai, he worked with Émile Breton, Camille Corot and Joseph Blanc.

He met and married Virginie Demont-Breton, also a painter and daughter of Jules Breton. The two artists settled in Wissant, on the Opal Coast, which increased their interest in maritime scenes in their painting.

In 1890, he became a member of the jury of the Salon des Artistes Français. He and his wife took several students under their wing.

The painter receives two gold medals at world exhibitions, and organizes a solo show at the Galerie Georges Petit.

One of his daughters, Adrienne Ball-Demont, also became an artist.

Adrien Demont was not an extremely well-known painter in his day, but he nonetheless won critical acclaim and distinguished himself from his colleagues to receive numerous awards for his work. Today, some of his works are exhibited in museums, but private collectors preserve most of his work.
