Rating and artist's value Eugène Damas

A little-known artist of the 19th century, Eugène Damas leaves behind an artistic identity of his own. This legacy consists mainly of oils on canvas. Today, prices for his works are rising under the auctioneer's hammer, and his quotation is stable. His canvases and other works are particularly prized, especially by French buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €130 to €9,400, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Damas's works. The life of Eugène Damas

Eugène Damas (1844-1899) was a French painter born in the Ardennes.

He studied at the Académie de peinture et de sculpture in Valenciennes, then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he took classes with Alexandre Cabanel.

He then returned to live in the Ardennes, where he became a teacher. Strongly influenced by the work of Jean-François Millet, his first exhibition at the Salon des artistes français established this stylistic kinship.

He founded a partnership with sculptor Alphonse Colle in his native region.

He took on several commissions to decorate churches, producing copies after Rubens and Murillo.

He died in Charleville at the age of 55.
