Artist's style and technique

Jacques Doucet's works are characterized by their abstract aesthetic. The painter was a member of the Cobra movement, of which he was one of the co-founders along with the artist Corneille, and of Lyrical Abstraction, a modern painter movement that emerged after the Second World War, a name given to it by the painter Georges Mathieu. The artist produced mainly drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Jacques Doucet

Jacques Doucet (1924-1994) was a 20th-century abstract painter.

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, the artist became interested in poetry and painting at an early age. At the start of his career, as he began to question these two mediums, he met the painter and poet Max Jacob, who was to help him along his artistic path. In the painter's own words, Jacob inspired him to question his work through his complex and constructive criticism. He painted more than he wrote, but used his talents as a poet to name his paintings.

In 1947, he met artist Guillaume Cornelius van Beverloo, known as Corneille, with whom he founded the Cobra movement, discovering a new face of abstraction.

He died in Paris in 1994, aged 69.

Jacques Doucet's imprint on his period

Jacques Doucet is not a well-known painter, nor is he the first to spring to mind when one thinks of lyrical abstraction. Nonetheless, during his lifetime he managed to acquire a certain notoriety and make a living from his art.

Today, most of his works are held in private collections.
