Style and technique of artist Frantisek Foltyn

Most of Frantisek Foltyn's work focuses on analytical cubism. He strives for total abstraction, which is not yet perfect abstraction.

The life of Frantisek Foltyn

Frantisek Foltyn (1891-1976), a French artist, became a major figure in the art world of the 20th century. He studied painting at the Académie des Arts et Métiers in Pargue, then at the Académie Julian and later at the Grande Chaumière. He was influenced by analytical cubists such as Braque.

Gradually, like Malevich, he worked on shapes, colors and their meaning: this was the birth of synthetic cubism. He sought to go ever further in the quest for abstraction, but did not go as far as Malevitch. Later, towards the end of his career, he returned to painting landscapes and still lifes, and so did not complete his quest for abstraction.

Foltyn and cubism

Frantisek Foltyn left his mark on the cubist movement. He belonged to the last phase, that of the synthetic, which put into practice the contributions of Cézannean cubism and analytic cubism. He produced not only oils on canvas, but also lithographs and other drawings. What's special about this artist is that he left his cubist experimentation in favor of still lifes and landscape paintings. This evolution is original and uncommon among artists of his movement, who always strove for abstraction. In his still-life and landscape paintings, however, we can see the definite contribution of Cubism to shapes and curves.
