Style and technique of the artist Corneille

Artist Corneille is a member of the CoBrA movement. The movement's name comes from the first syllables of the cities of origin, Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam - born of a desire to counter the centralization of the avant-garde in Paris and revolutionize contemporary art. In the midst of a rebellion against abstraction and certain trends in Surrealism, CoBrA painters wanted to turn to new sources, uncontaminated by cultural norms and " artistic elitism ". It thus drew inspiration from "pure" art, such as prehistoric or medieval art, but also from folk art, children's drawings and art produced by psychologically disturbed people. Art Brut ", i.e. the art of people with absolutely no artistic training, is at the heart of the movement's reflections. New collectors began buying works by painters confined to psychiatric asylums and by self-taught artists.

Cornelius, a major figure in contemporary art

Belgian artist Guillaume Cornelis von Beverloo, known as Corneille, was born in Belgium in 1922.

He began his artistic training at the Amsterdam School of Fine Arts, where he discovered Surrealism. Along with a number of painters he was close to, he founded the CoBrA movement, which reacted to the quarrel between figuratism and abstraction, in order to transgress these divisions. The movement also included poets and writers. After a trip to North Africa, he exhibited in Paris and Amsterdam alongside Constant. The CoBrA group broke up, and Corneille moved between figuratism and abstraction. He makes extensive use of sun, cat, snake and bird motifs in his work. The image of the woman is also very present.

From 1948 onwards, he set up and developed his own graphics business, producing works using the aquagravure technique.

He was a great admirer of Vincent Van Gogh, and the painter had a major influence on his work.

He died in 2010, aged 88, and was buried in accordance with his last wishes next to Van Vogh in the cemetery at Anvers sur Oise.

Corneille's imprint on his period

Corneille marked his time with his reformist spirit and constant artistic renewal. He played an important role in the evolution of 20th-century Dutch art, experimenting with new artistic techniques throughout his life. Today, his work is highly prized at auction, and collectors play a major role in preserving his work, even if some of it is exhibited in museums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all of Corneille's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of its originality. What's more, there are an enormous number of copies.
