The life of Moïse Kisling

Moïse Kisling was born on January 22, 1891 in Krakow, Poland. Driven by his talent, he moved to Paris in 1910. Kisling exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1912, and became friends with many of the artists of his time. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion, becoming a French citizen twelve years later.

In 1919, Kisling had his first major exhibition. His marriage to an officer's daughter enabled him to travel and discover new landscapes, bringing a new vivacity to his palette.

Gifted at forging links between different artists, his studio on rue Joseph-Bara became a veritable meeting place for Parisian artists and intellectuals, frequented by Max Jacob, Jean Cocteau and Pierre Reverdy among others.

Like many artists, Kisling was affected by totalitarianism and had to flee to the United States. He continued to paint, however, and even exhibited in Los Angeles in 1942. He returned to France four years later, with bolder color choices and more opulent floral compositions. He reaffirmed his place on the French art scene with an exhibition at Galerie Drouant-David in 1951, before dying two years later in 1953.

The artist's works and style

Initially influenced by the Fauvist, Cubist and Post-Impressionist movements, Moise Kisling's early works are innovative.

In the 1920s, the artist developed a more realistic style, exploring themes such as portraits, nudes and landscapes. Often characterized by warm colors and expressive strokes, Kisling's compositions are very lively, testifying to the artist's desire to capture the essence of the subject represented. Very popular, his nudes are distinguished by their sensuality and elegance.

Marked by visible, dynamic brushstrokes, Kisling's works are distinguished by their energetic pictorial approach. What's more, the artist was able to capture the subject's emotions with precision, transposing them perfectly onto his canvas.

In addition to painting, Moise Kisling has experimented with different techniques such as engraving and mixed media.
