Style and technique of artist Maurice Mendjiksy

Maurice Mendjiksy mainly paints oils on canvas. He also worked in gouache and simple drawing. At the beginning of his career, he produced works that could be linked to Cézanne cubism. Devastated by the war and the fate of his loved ones, his work became more abstract and sombre towards the end of his career.

Maurice Mendjiksy, painter of Provence and martyrdom

Maurice Mendjiksy (1890-1951), a Franco-Polish artist, was born in Lodz, Poland.

He left to study composition in Berlin at an early age, but realized there that his true artistic vocation lay in drawing. He soon moved to Paris, where he began studying in Fernand Cormon's studio in 1906. His talent was soon discovered, and he was exhibited by Georges Petit, an influential art dealer of the time. He frequented Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso, among others.

He met Renoir in 1913 and was influenced by his work. It was with Renoir that he discovered Provence, which was to become his main source of inspiration. He also painted Russian and Polish landscapes in the late 1910s. On his return to Paris, he met Kiki de Montparnasse, one of his models. By 1921, he was exhibiting at the Café Parnasse. He was immersed in and contributed to the artistic revival in Paris during the Great War.

Convinced by Provence thanks to Renoir, he moved to Saint Paul de Vence, where he lived for the rest of his life. There he met his wife, Rose, with whom he had two children: Claude and Serge. The latter would also become a renowned artist.

He received many commissions in the 1930s, but the political situation in Europe was to destroy him. Together with Signac, Langevin and Joliot-Curie, he soon founded the Intellectuals for Peace movement. His son Serge became France's youngest Resistance fighter. His wife was arrested in 1942 and his first son, Claude, was murdered by the Nazis two weeks before the Liberation.

He never recovered from this, drawing the Warsaw ghettos until his death in 1951, using only black and white. These are his most powerful and intellectually accomplished works. They impressed Picasso.

Maurice Mendjiksy's imprint on his period

Maurice Mendjiksy left his mark on his time through his intellectual commitment, which is reflected in his works. He participated in the revival of art in the first half of the 20th century. His drawings of the Warsaw ghettos are a historic testimony to the suffering of the Jewish people.
