The life of Marcel Bascouard
Marcel Bascouard (1913 - 1978) was a 20th-century French artist.
Born in Bourges, Bascouard grew up in an unbalanced family. His mother killed his father, leaving him deeply traumatized and leading a very poor life, sleeping in garden sheds or cars. He began producing his first drawings in the 1930s, and was noticed by Marcel Pinon, who invited him to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bourges, but the experience was short-lived. He drew mainly in pen and ink, and also painted a few canvases. Marcel Bascouard has a habit of cross-dressing, and takes self-portraits of himself in photographs. He lived like a tramp, dressed very eccentrically and became a figure of the town of Bourges. He was arrested a few times for dressing as a woman, but continued his artistic production nonetheless.
He was murdered by strangulation in 1978, and the town of Bourges paid for his funeral.
