Artist's style and technique
Belonging to the post-conceptual universe, Christopher Wool's artistic style is based on the painting of large, stencilled letter-spattered compositions that contrast with neutral backgrounds, giving rise to sometimes luminescent words and conferring a spectral, kaleidoscopic character. In these enigmatic compositions, the words remain rectilinear and on the same plane, while the phrases explode and wash up on the edges of the canvas.
The life of Christopher Wool
Born in Chicago in 1955, Christopher Wool grew up in a science-oriented family, which did not predestine him for a career in art. In 1973, however, he began a brief training program at the New York Studio School to nurture his penchant for painting. Nevertheless, he abandoned the Fine Arts temporarily to devote himself to underground film and music. In the mid-1980s, his passion for painting resurfaced, calling him back to order. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cindy Sherman, he now finds his calling and begins to make his mark. Christopher Wool matured his theory over time, incorporating the graffiti technique characterized by the use of aerosol paint and stencils, while dabbling in screen printing. In 1988, Wool exhibited one of his landmark works at 303 Gallery, entitled "Apocalypse Now" in reference to Francis Ford Coppola's famous film. In this famous text painting, he quotes a phrase from the film, itself taken from Joseph Conrad's In the Heart of Darkness. He is also part of the movement to challenge American hegemony and the counter-culture that criticized the Vietnam War.
Christopher Wool's imprint on his period
Since the 1990s, Wool has made silkscreen his preferred artistic medium. He fuses figure and disfigurement in the ballet of his abstract, spontaneous canvases. His reputation soared in the 1980s, thanks to the many institutions in which he exhibited. He exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Christopher Wool signs his works with his full name in cursive or sometimes capital letters.
