The artist's works and style

Influenced by Futurism and Cubism, Louis Marcoussis' style is characterized by deconstructed forms and fragmented pictorial space. Indeed, the artist was known for his geometric compositions on flat surfaces, where objects are represented in a totally unstructured way and from several angles.

Louis Marcoussis' color palette is very earthy, favoring colors such as gray and brown, applied very harmoniously to create a soothing atmosphere. The artist was also known for his use of graphic forms such as lines and circles. These details reinforce the abstract dimension of his works and accentuate the fragmentation of forms.

In addition to painting, the artist also practiced engraving. With great talent, he explored the same motif as in his paintings, creating a coherence in his style.

Louis Marcoussis, his life and work

Louis Marcoussis was born in Warsaw in 1878. Moving to France in 1903, Marcoussis began by selling caricatures, before associating with renowned artists such as Picasso and Braque. During the First World War, he served in the Foreign Legion, which earned him French naturalization. His distinctive cubist art has earned him an important place in art history.

Trained by Jules Lefebvre and a participant in the 1905 Salon d'Automne, Louis Marcoussis quickly changed his style thanks to his artistic encounters. Inspired by Degas, he turned to Cubism in 1910, under the influence of Braque and Picasso.

Unlike his founders, Marcoussis remained faithful to Cubism, departing from it only slightly. From the 1930s onwards, Marcoussis devoted himself mainly to engraving, producing illustrations for poems and works characterized by natural colors, still lifes and portraits, as well as elements of calligraphy.

Louis Marcoussis participated in several Parisian salons, such as the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, as well as in exhibitions abroad alongside other Cubist artists. In 1925, he had his first solo show at Galerie Pierre Chareau, followed by numerous exhibitions worldwide. A posthumous exhibition was organized at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris to highlight his exceptional career, one year after his death.
