Artist's style and technique

André Lhote soon made his own mark, combining classical pictorial heritage with a touch of modernity. Over time, his style evolved, moving closer to the Cubist movement. Many of his works feature landscapes, human figures and still lifes, in which he strives to harmonize reality and abstraction using schematic geometric shapes and angular lines.

The life of André Lhote

André Lhote (1885-1962), a native of the southwest of France, grew up in Bordeaux in a modest family. After an elementary school education, he trained as a cabinetmaker. However, he turned to painting, as he was strongly intrigued and attracted by this medium, in both classical and modern art. His many encounters, notably with the writer Jacques Rivière, who sealed a lasting friendship, had a decisive impact on his career. Lhote's association with notable art lovers contributed to his renown.

Lhote's works are exhibited every year at the Salon d'Automne. He soon joined the Salon des artistes girondins in 1908.

His style evolved in reaction to the artistic trends of his time. He created cubist paintings with a certain inclination for classical art, adding his own personal touch. His paintings were noticed and enabled him to take part in major London exhibitions.

His landscapes, a blend of realism and abstraction, captivate us with their emphasis on color. Some of his nudes, oscillating between structure and deconstruction, are presented alongside Picasso's masterpieces.

Lhote frequented the great figures of French and Mexican modern art, traveling and exhibiting his work in The Hague and Rotterdam. He also visited Brazil and Egypt, where he found new inspiration for his paintings. Lhote rivals his contemporaries in ingenuity, without ever compromising his singularity.

In 1953, twelve of his paintings were exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne, followed by his major retrospective in 1958. He died four years later in 1962.

Lhote's influence on his time

André Lhote is a painter relatively unknown to the general public, but appreciated by collectors, who play a major role in preserving his work, which includes a considerable output.

He made a significant contribution to the major artistic upheavals of the 20th century.
