Alfred Reth is an Austro-Hungarian artist who belongs to the École de Paris. He produced prints, drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Alfred Reth

Alfred Reth (1884 - 1966) was an Austro-Hungarian painter of the 20th century.

Born in Budapest into a modest Hungarian family, he began his professional career as a bank clerk. He met László Mednyánszky , who taught him to paint. He developed an interest in Buddhism and Oriental art, which would influence his work. He moved to Paris in 1905 to further his career, where he met the Orientalist painter Jean Buhot. He joined the Cubists in 1911, staying away from the Fauves. He befriended Georges Braque, Jean Metzinger and André de Segonzac, among others.

He exhibited in Berlin during these years, but was interned in 1914 as a "citizen of an enemy country of France". After the war, he turned to abstraction, exhibiting at the Salon des Réalités nouvelles.

Towards the end of his career, he returned to more figurative work, using printed sheets as collage.

He died in Paris in 1966, aged 82.
