Style and technique of artist Hubert Yencesse

Hubert Yencesse masters the traditional techniques of sculpture: bronze and plaster, to produce a large number of sculptures in the stylistic vein of Aristide Maillol - thus working on the representation of the female body, which constitute the major part of his work. He also produces preparatory drawings for his work in volume.

Hubert Yencesse, his life and work

Hubert Yencesse (1900-1987) was a French sculptor born in Paris.

Discovering his vocation as an artist early on, he went to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon in 1919, as his father, a medalist, taught there. Through him, Yencesse met François Pompon, who became his teacher.

In 1921, he exhibited some of his work at the Salon d'Automne.

He was awarded the Blumenthal Prize and set up his own studio in Paris. He met Maillol, who was to have a major influence on his work (and vice versa).

On the strength of his talent and success, Yencesse was appointed Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he taught sculpture for twenty years. The sculptor César took over his post in 1970.

He helped train many artists during his teaching period, and exerted a notable influence on many artists (including Aristide Maillol, although the opposite is often thought), continuing Degas' work by taking the dancer as his iconographic program to represent the female body.

Hubert Yencesse's imprint on his period

Some of Hubert Yencesse's works can be seen in various cities in Europe and France, including the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, but relatively few: most of his work is in private collections. His legacy is one of twentieth-century art and sculpture.
