Antoine Watteau, founder of rocaille

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a French painter and architect.

As a child, he was beaten by his father, an alcoholic and violent man. It is assumed that his early onset of pulmonary tuberculosis, known as phisy at the time, was due to this. This trauma was to have a major influence on his painting.

His family recognized his talent early on and placed him with a painter, whose identity his biographers have doubts about. He moved to Paris at a young age, to Saint Germain des Prés. He earned his living copying paintings.

The painter Gillot took him under his wing and became his master. It was with Gillot that he discovered the pictorial theme of fêtes galantes, and made it the heart of his painting. At the start of his career, he produced historical paintings to make a name for himself with the public and be recognized by his peers.

He opposed Charles Le Brun during the quarrel at the Académie Royale between the Rubenists and the Poussinists, and ardently defended the prevalence of color over drawing.

Pierre Crozat invited him to the Château de Montmorency, ironically the former property of Charles Le Brun. He then trained as an architect with Claude Audran III.

He then won second place in the Prix de Rome and left for the Académie de France to continue his training as a painter.

He became a member of the Académie, and presented Le pèlerinage à l'île de Cythère five years later, which has been owned by a new private collector since 2023.

The colors he uses are the same as those later adopted by Degas later: rosy hues, dark interiors.

At the end of his career, he was in a critical financial situation, but nevertheless traveled to London. He died in 1721, with Gersaint at his bedside, most likely from the childhood illness that never left him.
