The life of Hyacinthe Rigaud

Hyacinthe Rigaud was a famous French painter of the 17th and 18th centuries, born in Perpignan on July 18, 1659 and died in Paris on December 29, 1743. He is best known for his elegant, flattering portraits of French high society, making him one of the most renowned portraitists of his time.

Rigaud began his artistic career studying painting in Montpellier, then moved to Paris in 1681, where he quickly acquired a prestigious clientele. His portrait style was characterized by meticulous attention to detail, majestic poses and skilful use of light to enhance the grandeur of his subjects. 

Rigaud's most famous work is undoubtedly his portrait of Louis XIV, painted in 1701, which has become one of the most iconic representations of the Sun King. This portrait contributed to Rigaud's international renown and established him as the official portraitist of Louis XIV's court.
