Style and technique of the artist Alphonse de Neuville

Alphonse de Neuville was a 19th-century painter of academic figuratism. He is particularly famous for his paintings of military art, which depict war scenes as well as the everyday life of soldiers in peacetime. He produced engravings, drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Alphonse de Neuville

Alphonse Marie Adolphe Deneuville (1835-1885) was a French painter born in Saint-Omer, Pas-de-Calais.

His well-to-do family refused to let him enroll in the Ecole des Mousses, which he did. After a short stay, he was admitted to the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied under the painter Picot.

He exhibited early at the Salon, where he received advice and encouragement from Eugène Delacroix.

He developed his style following academic techniques, and excelled in battle scenes and historical scenes. In the 1870s, he took part in the war against Prussia as a national guard. Still painting during this period, he was one of the so-called "combat painters". He found his inspiration directly on the battlefield, and thus had access to all the details of uniforms, the distribution of soldiers on the field, details of wounded bodies and corpses.

He gained greater notoriety after the Franco-Prussian conflict.

He collaborated with Édouard Detaille, another great military painter of his time, to produce panoramas of various battles. His paintings were also inspired by the Crimean War and the Anglo-Zulu War.

In a letter, he wrote: "I want to tell the story of our defeats, in the sense that they were honorable for us [...] Whatever people say, we were not defeated without glory, and I think it's good to show that.

Francis de Saint Vidal sculpted a monument in his honor at Place Wagram. The street around his private mansion now bears his name.

Alphonse de Neuville's influence on his era

De Neuville painted military scenes throughout his career, and his works are now preserved in numerous museums and art collections around the world. He leaves behind an important legacy as a military painter.

Today, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
