Style and technique of the artist Aimé Morot

Aimé Morot is a painter and sculptor, mainly working on portraits. He has worked with drawing to prepare his compositions, oil on canvas, which is most often found at auction, and sculpture. His work is very classical, in keeping with the canons of the teachings he followed.

Aimé Morot, 19th-century portraitist

Aimé Nicolas Moreau (1850 - 1913) was born in Nancy. He began his training at the Ecole de Nancy under Charles Sellier, then became a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He made several unsuccessful attempts for the Prix de Rome, winning in 1973 with La captivité des juifs à Babylone.

He soon married Suzanne Gérôme and became Jean-Léon Gérôme's son-in-law. He exhibited for several years at the Salon des artistes français, and Marie Bashkirtseff, a painter of the same period, noticed him and noted in her diary her admiration for the paintings on display. A talented sculptor, he also created decorations for several buildings in Nancy. He became a professor at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where he taught portraiture. In his day, he was one of the twenty most influential artists at the Institut de France.

He built himself a house in Dinard, where he lived and died. He collaborates with the Valsuani foundry to create his death mask.

Aimé Morot's imprint on his period

Aimé Morot left his mark on his time through his mastery of portraiture and his teaching at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, but he is a forgotten artist today. His works are nevertheless appreciated on the auction market. Compared to other artists, few of his works have been presented on the market, but his quotation is stable.
