The life of Pierre-Georges Jeanniot

Pierre-Georges Jeanniot was a French artist, best known for his talents as a painter and illustrator. He was born on April 3, 1848 in Geneva, Switzerland, and died on September 19, 1934 in Paris, France. Jeanniot was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

His father was head of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, so he was exposed to the artistic milieu of the 19th century from an early age.

He began a military career but eventually resigned when the Army offered him the rank of major, preferring to devote himself entirely to an artistic career.

He began his career as a painter and became famous for his works, which mainly depicted scenes of Parisian life, including portraits, nudes and Belle Époque scenes, but especially scenes of military life. His works often reflect the social and cultural life of his time.

Jeanniot was also a talented illustrator and contributed to numerous publications, including magazines and books. He illustrated works by famous French writers such as Emile Zola, Guy de Maupassant and Anatole France.

Jeanniot's imprint on his era

Pierre-Georges Jeanniot was a versatile and talented artist, known for his paintings and illustrations that capture the civil and military life of France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He made his mark at the end of the 19th century, fading into the background as the new pictorial currents of the 20th took hold.

Today, his works are still successful at auction. Although some of his works are held in museums in the USA and Europe, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Pierre-Georges Jeannot sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, some copies do exist, which is why expertise is essential.
