The life of Jules Hervé

Jules René Hervé (1887 - 1981) was a French artist who became a major figure in 20th-century art.

He was born in Langres, in the Haute-Marne region. His uncle was a drawing teacher. He left for Paris in 1908, to study at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs.

He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1910 and began teaching the following year. He received several medals (including a gold one at the 1925 Salon).

During the Great War, he was mobilized. He resumed his career in 1925, traveling around Europe to meet other artists, discover new works and find inspiration.

He exhibited in Belfort and Langres with several artists, including Jules Adler, with whom he shared artistic similarities. He won a gold medal at the 1937 Universal Exhibition, and was then elected vice-president of the Salon des artistes français.

Faced with the novelty of works at the Salons and on the art market at the time, and with no desire to innovate artistically, he simply chose to retire from artistic life, and returned to Langres where he ended his days.

The legacy of Jules Hervé

Jules Hervé, among all the painters of the 20th century, stands out for his naturalism and simple realism. Some would call him an Impressionist, even if that's not quite the spirit in which he lived. His works are still sought-after and appreciated at auction.

Recognizing Jules Hervé's signature

In most cases, Jules Hervé signs his works at the bottom of the canvas in a color that contrasts with the background. Occasionally, his works go unsigned.
