French sculptor Louis de Monard (1873-1939) became an important figure in 19th-century animal sculpture.

He was born in Antun into a military family. He joined the army in Dijon, and began drawing at the same time. Moving to Paris, he frequented many artists in Montmartre and worked with the Courrier Illustré during the Belle Époque.

After exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, he gradually turned to sculpture, and produced his first series of bronze dogs to honor a commission from the French government.

He produces a number of monumental works that are installed in public places across the country.
