The life of Ram Kumar

Ram Kumar was born in Shimla, Punjab, in 1924, into a middle-class Indian family. His father worked for the British Indian government, and it was in this context that he began visiting exhibitions. He met the painter Raza and followed him, along with Akbar Pademsee, to Paris, where he painted with Fernand Léger and André Lhote. He moved towards abstraction and took part in various exhibitions in France, India and around the world. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1956, and organized a solo monograph in New Dehli in 2008.

His work is close to the lyrical abstraction produced in France at the same period.

He received high civilian honors in India and died in 2018 at the age of 93.
