The life of Serge Charchoune

Serge Charchoune was born in Russia in 1888 into a family of cloth merchants. Very unschooled, Charchoune spent his time drawing. His vocation soon revealed itself: he was to be a painter.

After several years of study at various academies in Russia, Charchoune, influenced by Western painting, decided to move to Paris.

On his arrival in France in 1912, Charchoune joined the Académie de la Palette. The young artist befriended painter Jean Metzinger, who introduced him to Fauvism and Cubism. Charchoune quickly developed a passion for these new movements and exhibited with them at the Salon des Indépendants. He is influenced by the work of Vlaminck, Braque and the other great Fauvists and Cubists.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Charchoune fled to Spain. There, he organized his first solo exhibitions. His stay was marked by major pictorial discoveries, which were to have a major influence on his art. It was also during this period that ornamental cubism took shape in his canvases. He included ideograms. After a meeting with Picabia, Charchoune came into contact with the "Dada" group.

Returning to Paris in 1920, Serge Charchoune took a full part in the activities of Dadaism. In the '30s, he moved towards purism , before experiencing a long period of depression. Discouraged, the artist stopped producing.

His activity resumed in the early 1940s, with the opening of his own workshop in Paris. This new workplace marked the beginning of his success. His work was appreciated and began to sell well.

Inspired by water and music, Charchoune's style becomes increasingly abstract. White, which the artist considers "the absolute color", even though white is not a color in the strict sense of the word, takes on an increasingly important role in his compositions.

During his lifetime, Serge Charchoune was considered a counter-current painter. He was exhibited in numerous Parisian and foreign salons. He died in 1975, leaving an indelible mark on the history of art.

His works and artistic style

Serge Charchoune's work is a fusion of cubism and abstract art, characterized by great artistic sensitivity. His works are easily recognized by their highly geometric composition, bright colors, different textures and materials, and the presence of abstract motifs.

Charchoune also explores spiritual themes. His compositions can therefore evoke atmospheres of transcendence and reverie. Serge Charchoune's work offers a unique insight into 20th-century cubism and abstraction.

On the art market, Serge Charchoune's works are highly prized. His Cubist paintings, produced in the 1920s, are the most sought-after by collectors. Due to their great popularity, they can fetch hundreds of thousands of euros in auction houses.

As for Charchoune's other paintings, their average selling price is in the tens of thousands of euros.
