The life of Juan Gris

Juan Gris (1887-1927) was a 20th-century Spanish cubist artist.

He was born in Madrid, where he studied industrial design. He then studied painting with José Maria Carbonero.

He moved to Paris in 1906, where he rubbed shoulders with Picasso, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger.

During the first part of his career, he produced illustrations for newspapers, and began painting seriously and recurrently in 1910.

Over the next five years, his work progressed towards Analytical Cubism, where he would fully establish his artistic identity. After working for Serge de Diaghilev, he concretized his aesthetic theories between 1924 and 1925, in a work entitled Des possibilités de la peinture. He subsequently exhibited at the Galerie Simon in Paris, as well as in Düsseldorf and Berlin, where his works met with some success.

Salvador Dali described him as a more accomplished, truer and more constructed painter than Picasso - who sought to work on emotions, whereas Juan Gris' work is more focused on technique and composition.

He died in Boulogne Billancourt in 1927.

The imprint of Juan Gris his time

Considered one of the greatest Cubist theorists of the 20th century, Juan Gris was influenced by Matisse and Picasso. He explored fragmentation and spatial distribution.

His international reputation is marked by numerous exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 1982 and his representation of France at the Venice Biennale in 1988.
