The artist's works and style

Opposed to artists of the new generation and emerging movements such as Cubism, Dadaism and Futurism, Henry de Groux drew his inspiration from Romanticism. An admirer of Delacroix and Géricault, the artist's compositions adopt an idealism of their own.

In addition to painting, De Groux is also a sculptor. Influenced by Symbolist literature, he depicts imaginary portraits of his heroes such as Baudelaire, Dante and Napoleon. The artist also frequently depicts Byzantine history and mystical scenes. His depictions are often of torture and hysterical crowds in an atmosphere of chaos.

The life of Henry de Groux

Henry de Groux was born in Brussels in 1866. The son of realism painter Charles de Groux, Henry quickly developed a passion for painting, revealing a precocious talent. After studying at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the young artist became a member of the artistic group "L'Essor", then of the "XX", a circle of Symbolist painters, which he left a few years later following various scandals.

In 1891, Henry de Groux moved to Paris to develop his art. In France, he rubbed shoulders with other artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin, and befriended Apollinaire, Mallarmé and Huysmans.

Marked by the Dreyfus affair, Henry de Groux takes a stand in support of Dreyfus and Émile Zola. This marked the beginning of his social and political commitment.

After several exhibitions and travels across Europe, Henry de Groux was committed to a psychiatric hospital in Florence in 1904. Diagnosed with paranoia, the artist managed to escape and returned to Belgium with his wife.

Henry de Groux died in 1930, leaving behind an important artistic legacy. Although he did not enjoy major artistic recognition during his lifetime, the artist was rediscovered and appreciated a few years after his death. His contribution to symbolism and social art made him a major artist of the 19th century.
