Artist's style and technique
Lucien Goubert is not attached to any particular movement; he produces a few drawings and prints, but works mainly with paint, whether oil on canvas or gouache. His inspiration came mainly from rural landscapes, but he also produced a number of marine paintings.
Lucien Goubert, forgotten painter of the 19th century
Lucien Goubert (1887-1964), was a French painter who produced landscape and marine paintings. He was born in the Cotentin region of France, and as a child dreamed of becoming a sailor.
However, an accident prevents him from realizing his dream. That's why he decided to paint. Self-taught and therefore without any artistic training, he couldn't make a living from his work, so he opened a photography and framing studio.
At the same time, he managed to get a studio in Cherbourg where he could paint his marine pictures. He exhibited in several towns in Normandy and at the 1937 Paris World Fair.
The artist was successful at the time, and his paintings were exhibited during his lifetime in Tunisia and the United States.
He stopped painting and producing in 1954, after the death of his wife.
Lucien Goubert died in 1964 in Normandy.
Lucien Goubert's imprint on his era
Lucien Goubert succeeds in creating a unique painting that reflects the energy of his time, and makes unrestrained use of contrasting shapes and colors, the keystone of his artistic style.
He was a marine painter of some renown during his lifetime, forgotten today but still of interest to collectors.
