Élisée Maclet's style and technique

The city and urban landscapes are the central theme of Maclet's paintings.

The artist was close to the work of Maurice Utrillo, who in turn was close to Pointillist (Pissarro), Cubist (Valadon) and Naturalist (Courbet) artists. These multiple influences are reflected in his work, in a context favorable to the development of new movements and experiments. He mainly produced drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Élisée Maclet

Élisée Maclet was born in the Somme region of France in 1881.

From a modest background, his father initially rejected his aspirations to become a painter and pushed him to become a gardener, turning down an offer from Puvis de Chavannes, who wanted to train Maclet in painting as a child.

He moved to Paris in 1906, where he became a decorator for the Moulin Rouge, while continuing to paint. He favored Montmartre in his representations, without using Impressionism like his fellow artists. He prefers techniques derived from pointillism and cubism. He uses several techniques, including brush and knife.

He soon established contacts with art dealers, enabling him to make a living from his work. He became close to the painter Max Jacob, with whom he had an affair for some time.

In Montmartre, he focuses on colorimetry and purity of color.

The end of his career was complicated, marked by an economic crisis, internment at Sainte-Anne and then the Second World War.

Élisée Maclet's imprint on his period

Considered the first painter to depict Montmartre in a way other than Impressionism, Maclet innovated to develop his own style. His artistic singularity has left a lasting impression, and today he is a much-appreciated artist among collectors.
