The life of Gino Sarfatti

Gino Sarfatti was born in Venice in 1912 into a wealthy Italian family. His studies in naval engineering at the University of Genoa enabled him to study and experiment with lighting and the use of innovative materials. In 1939, Gino Sarfatti founded "Arteluce", a studio specializing in the design of architectural and sculptural lighting fixtures. Arteluce became a major creative center for Italy's most talented designers and architects, playing a decisive role in contemporary design influence thanks to its vast catalog of luminaires.

Due to the racial laws imposed by the Fascist government in 1943, Gino Sarfatti fled to Switzerland with his family. The management of Arteluce is then entrusted to Pinuccia Azzaroni Bassani, his accountant and secretary. Bassani's direction brings his own touch, using cones and metal shapes to create light projections along outstretched arms. This influence would leave a lasting imprint on Arteluce's future aesthetic.

It wasn't until 1946, after the Liberation, that Gino Sarfatti and his family returned to Italy.

In the 1960s, Arteluce expanded rapidly, offering lighting projects and customized solutions for homes and buildings. The studio enjoyed worldwide success. In collaboration with renowned Italian designers such as Nino Zoncada, Gustavo Pulitzer-Finale and Paolo de Poli, Gino Sarfatti and Arteluce have also been involved in interior redesign and furniture projects for Italian industry such as cruise liners.

By the end of the 60s, Arteluce's activities were becoming increasingly complex. Gino Sarfatti decided to sell the studio to FLOS in 1973, at a time when the company was enjoying considerable commercial success.
