Artist's style and technique
Auguste Trémont mainly produced animal sculptures in bronze, but also preparatory drawings for them. His most successful works are his animal bronzes, in the image of Barye. He is interested in fairly massive animals, such as felines and deer.
The life of Albéric Collin
Born in Antwerp in 1886 to a Flemish and Liège family, Albéric Collin studied sculpture techniques at the Beaux-Arts d'Anvers. In the early part of his career, he produced caricatures of living figures, but preferred to concentrate on animal sculpture. He became friends with Rembrandt Bugatti, who was to have a lasting influence on his work: Bugatti watched him sculpt and advised him at the same time. He drew his inspiration and models from the zoological gardens of Antwerp, where he sometimes bumped into Paul Jouve, also an animal painter and sculptor. He took a short break from caricature during the First World War, but soon returned to it. Throughout his career, he perfected the technique of casting and patination, which he considered to be the most important stages in sculpture. His preferred material was bronze, although he sometimes used plaster. He exhibited throughout Europe, notably at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won a medal in 1927. His career was marked by the 1930 Antwerp World's Fair, for which he created twelve monumental bronze elephants. Retrospectives were held in Brussels and Antwerp, where he died in 1962.
Albéric Collin's imprint on his period
To this day, Albéric Collin is Belgium's best-known animal sculptor. Rising to the heights ofAntoine-Louis Barye, he succeeded in making his work known beyond Belgium. His monumental elephant for the Congo pavilion at the 1935 Brussels World's Fair was a landmark, but so were his ancillary works. Some of these are now exhibited and preserved at the Antwerp Zoological Park, his main source of inspiration. Museums in the Netherlands and Belgium preserve some of his work, but private collectors play the greatest role in its preservation.
Recognizing Albéric Collin's signature
It's not always easy to decipher, or even to be lucky enough to come across, a work signed by Collin. He did, however, sign his work with his name in cursive letters, and often dated his sculptures.
