Nikolai Sapunov, 20th-century Russian symbolist

Nikolai Nikolaevich Sapunov (1880 - 1912) was a Russian painter.

Born in Moscow, he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture under Isaac Levitan. He then continued his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg.

His first works were for Moscow's Bolshoi Theater, inspired by Constantin Korovine's designs. Like many Russian artists, theater sets were a springboard for launching his career.

On his own, without receiving commissions, most of his work consists of still lifes of flowers.
