The artist's works and style

Bold and expressive, Henri Manguin's style is characterized by pure pigments and luminous color treatment. He was a member of the Fauvist group, which formed in 1905 at the Salon d'Automne. Along with other artists such as Vlaminck, they built on some of the achievements of Impressionism, while at the same time introducing a new way of painting.

The life of Henri Manguin

Henri Manguin (1874-1949) was a French Fauvist painter of the early 20th century.

He left school early to learn painting directly from established artists. He entered Gustave Moreau's studio, where he learned the basics, and met Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet, whose works would contribute to the founding of the Fauvist movement after the Salle VII scandal. He was already well known before this event, having exhibited his paintings at the Berthe Weil gallery and having already signed a contract with the dealer Ambroise Vollard, his business was prosperous right from the start of his career.

A friend of Paul Signac, he traveled extensively to Saint-Tropez, a town that provided him with many new landscapes, and to Honfleur, a favorite of painter Félix Vallotton.

After exhibiting in numerous venues in France and Russia, he moved to Switzerland during the First World War.

He died in Gassin, in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, at the age of 75.
