For almost forty years, his works have been auctioned at prices ranging from €115 to €4,967,720, a substantial delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to the artist's works. One of his paintings (oil on canvas) without taffy, dating from 1969, sold for €4,967,720 in 2022, whereas it was estimated at between €3,548,400 and €5,914,000.

Vasudeo Gaitonde is one of the pioneers of Indian abstract painting. He uses several artistic techniques, including oil paint, paint on cardboard, acrylic, charcoal and printmaking. He works extensively on colorimetry and form.

Vasudeo Gaitonde's career

Vasudeo Gaitonde (1924-2001) was a 20th-century Indian abstract artist.

Born in Nagpur, he graduated from the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. He then joined the Bombay Progressive Artist's group, founded by Francis Newton Souza and Maqbool Fida Husain, among others.

He considers his work to be "non-objective", and has never considered himself an abstract painter, refusing to accept this label even from critics. He uses hieroglyphics to explain the silence in his canvases.

He exhibits all over the world, working mainly in Delhi, and has received numerous awards for his body of work.

Vasudeo Gaitonde died in Delhi in 2001, aged 76.
