Artist's style and technique

Sophie Taueber-Arp's works are distinguished by their unique, personal style and bold use of color. The artist develops her own pictorial language, combining surreal and abstract elements with organic and geometric forms, while retaining a certain suggestion of reality.

Tauber-Arp's uncommonly popular works have skyrocketed in value. Some of his drawings sell for tens of thousands of euros.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp, surrealism between rhythm and geometry

Sophie Henriette Gertrude Tauber, also known as Sophie Taeuber-Arp, was born in Davos, Switzerland. She studied applied arts in Munich, St. Gallen and Hamburg, then took dance classes and became a choreographer in parallel with her artistic career. In 1915, she met Jean Arp in Zurich, who was to become her husband, and took part with him in the emulation of the Dada movement.

She became a teacher at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, and danced in cabarets under a false name, her choreography being deemed strange and inconsistent with the school's principles. It was during these years that she created the series of sculpted heads that were to become her most famous works.

She married Jean Arp in 1921, and they soon built a house and artist's studio together in Clamart.

In 1926, they also tried their hand at decoration with Theo van Doesburg.

Her work evolved over the course of her career, and she gradually turned towards more abstraction, taking part in the abstraction-creation movement and founding the magazine Plastique.

In 1940, she had to leave Paris with her husband because of the Occupation, and took refuge in Grasse with other artists such as Sonia Delaunay.

She died in 1943, aged 53, at the home of her friend Max Bill.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp's mark on her era

Sophie Taeuber-Arp made a lasting impression on the Swiss Surrealists and the Dada group. Her works are relatively well known and exhibited, and over time have acquired a certain notoriety on the art market.
