The artist's works and style
Martin Barré quickly made his mark, developing his own abstract style based on tachism, a derivative of lyrical abstraction, resulting in a pure, sanitized rendering in keeping with the modern world.
He plays with collages and color contrasts, working with a particular concern for colorimetry.
The life of Martin Barré
Martin Barré (1924 - 1993) was a French abstract artist.
Born of an architect father, he too began studying architecture at the Beaux-Arts de Nantes, but preferred painting, which he learned alongside Paul Detombe. He spent some time in Paris and obtained a position as decorator for the Nantes theater from 1946 to 1947.
In 1948, he moved to Paris and held his first exhibition of figurative paintings. His interest in abstraction came later, and he went on to paint without tools. He was then categorized as a Tachist.
He exhibits his abstract canvases at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. His aim is to reveal space, and his approach is neither geometric nor informal.
Martin Barré died in Paris in 1993, aged 68.
