Robert Rauschenberg's style and technique

Robert Rauschenberg is a contemporary artist who has worked in a wide variety of media: drawing, painting, lithography and sculpture. Like Andy Warhol, he experimented extensively with silk-screen printing, which was particularly suited to the Pop Art movement in which they both evolved. The artist is also sometimes referred to as Neo-Dada, even though the Dada group was not a movement but an experiment.

The life of Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Milton Ernest Rauschenberg (1925 - 2008) was an American artist who produced a variety of avant-garde works.

He was born into a poor family in Texas, where he studied. During the Second World War, he fought in the U.S. Army, then enrolled at the Kansas City Art Institute for a year. It was his meeting with Willem de Kooning that decided him to become a painter. From 1948, he studied at the Julian Academy, where he met Susan Weil, who was to become his wife. He was also influenced by Merce Cunningham, an American dancer and choreographer. After continuing his studies at various schools and universities, in 1952 he took part in the first Happening in the history of art.

He developed several techniques throughout his career, and, like Pop Art artists, went on to develop screen printing on an industrial scale. Marcel Duchamp took an interest in his work, allowing him to be exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition.

He has exhibited all over the world and collaborated throughout his career with renowned dancers and choreographers.

He died in Florida in 2008, aged 82.
