Style and technique of artist Jacques Germain

Jacques Germain is considered one of the leading artists of lyrical abstraction. This movement emerged in the mid-20th century, bringing together painters and art theorists such as Olivier Debré and Hans Hartung. Germain works mainly on large supports, favoring paint that he often applies with a knife - creating large, pure flat areas of color on his canvases.

Jacques Germain, his life and work

Jacques Germain (1915-2001) was a French artist who became a leading figure in the art world of the 20th century. He began learning painting at the Académie Moderne, under the guidance of Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant. In 1931, Blaise Cendrars and Fernand Léger recommended that he continue his studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Jacques Germain, the only French student at the Bauhaus, embarked on this formative journey in October 1931, spending a year in Germany. After returning to France in 1932, he went back to Germany, this time to Frankfurt, where the constructivist painter Willi Baumeister gave him some lessons.

Like many artists, totalitarianism put the brakes on his career, as the Third Reich was particularly harsh on artistic innovation and abstraction - often regarded as degenerate art. During his military service, he was called up to the front under the colors of the French flag, before being imprisoned by the German army.

Discharged at the end of the war, he resumed painting, producing compositions for the rest of his life.

Jacques Germain's imprint on his period

Jacques Germain met many artists, including Georges Mathieu and Jean Fautrier: it was in this stimulating environment that he developed and refined his own style. In 1949, he presented his first solo exhibition in Paris.

Germain went on to participate in numerous international exhibitions, making a lasting impression on the art scene.

One of his hallmarks is his exploration of colorimetry. Modeled on the great Dutch masters of the 17th century, Jacques Germain introduced a tonal painting style with refined gradations, echoing Kandinsky's Spiritual in Art.
