Henri Bouchard is a 20th-century artist who produced a number of sculptures as part of the naturalist movement. His work is closely linked to animal representations and antique subjects. Technically, he was influenced by Louis Ernest Barrias.
Henri Bouchard, his life and work
Henri Bouchard (1875-1960), a French artist, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.
Born in Dijon, he was the son of a carpenter who predisposed him towards the decorative arts. He apprenticed with an ornamental decorator.
At the same time, he took classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, then at the Académie Julian and the École supérieure des Arts décoratifs. Finally, at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, he studied in the studio of Louis Ernest Barrias. In 1901, he won the Grand Prix de Rome for a sculpture inspired by ancient mythology, which opened the doors to the Villa Médicis. He then spent two years traveling in Europe and North Africa, which influenced his work and placed popular themes at the heart of his inspiration.
Back in Paris, he works with Jules Dalou and is appointed professor at the Académie Julian. He exhibited his work in several venues and became president of the Salon des Artistes français.
