Gio Ponti, Italian design icon

Gio Ponti was born in Milan in 1891.

He studied at Milan Polytechnic, but didn't graduate until 1921, the war having slowed things down. That same year, he founded his own architectural practice with two partners. At the same time, he worked as an illustrator, which explains the large number of drawings and prints on the art market. Two years later, he was appointed director of the porcelain manufacturer Richard - Ginori, and at this point in his career produced a great deal of painting on porcelain. He wins the Grand Prix for ceramics at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Thanks to this trip, Christofle commissioned him to build the Flying Angel in Saint Cloud, an early work that laid the foundations for his theory of the new Italian architecture.

He continues to collaborate with Christofle, designing furniture for the Italian department store La Rinascente. He helps found the Milian Triennial of Modern Art and Architecture.

In 1928, he founded the magazine Domus, whose aim was to promote artistic expression in all its forms; it dealt not only with interior design and architecture, but also with work in other forms that art can take.

During the 1930s, he continued to perfect his theories, publishing works on the principles of modern architecture. After the war, he became one of the leading proponents of the architectural revival of the period. He built numerous buildings in Milan, but also received commissions throughout Europe, in the United States and in Singapore.

He died in 1979.
