Claude Victor Boeltz, from bronze to surrealist refinement

Claude Victor Boeltz (b. 1937), a French artist, has become an important figure in the art world of the 20th century. He developed an early interest in art, geology and science - all of which were to play a major role in his work.

He trained in sculpture techniques with Henri Molin and the Susse frères foundry. Prior to this, the sculptor received theoretical training at the École Boulle and the Académie de Paris. His work is inspired by and synthesizes the work of Giacometti, Chiparus, Dali and Ruhlmann, although he also adds his own personal inspiration.

After working with Picasso in the south of France, he set up his own foundry in the Loire Valley. It was only after exchanging ideas with César (Baldaccini), who theorized the technique of exploded bronze, aimed at making the metal components of his piece appear liquefied and crystallized. In short, Boeltz succeeded in freezing the explosion in bronze.

He designed Hollywood-style furniture, combining his sculptural bronze technique with African emeralds, quartz or Murano glass inlaid in bronze.

Buoyed by his success, he built a foundry in Vega. Some of his works now decorate hotels in Los Angeles.

Claude Victor Boetlz's imprint on his period

Boeltz proved in France that surrealist sculpture was an important part of twentieth-century art history. On the art market today, his works are quoted, and his bronzes even more so.

He left a unique legacy, thanks to the artists he trained in his studio and the legacy he left in his time.
