Anthony II Claesz or tulipomania in painting
Anthony II Claesz or Anthony Claesz the Younger (1616-1652) was a 17th-century Dutch painter.
Born in Amsterdam, he worked there and was a pupil of Balthasar van der Ats, traveling between Paris and London. His work is essentially devoted to the still life of flowers. Filled with metaphors for time, birth, life and death, these compositions have had a considerable impact on the history of art - being revived in the 20th century by Vincent van Gogh, among others.
One of his paintings was presented for sale in October 2023 by Auctie's, depicting a bouquet of tulips painted ten years after the collapse of bulb speculation (February 1637). He thus placed himself in the era of his time, tulips being particularly popular and cultivated flowers in the Netherlands.
Anthony II Claesz's imprint on his era
Anthony II Claesz is considered an important artist of the Flemish Renaissance and left a lasting legacy on later generations of Dutch painters.
From his time to the present day, he has been and remains an artist appreciated by collectors the world over. Collectors play an important role in preserving his work, although some of his paintings and drawings are on display in museums in France and around the world.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Not all the painter's works are signed. However, with or without a mention, it is important for you to have the work appraised to ensure its originality and to be able to date it. What's more, of course, copies do exist. His signature is hardly visible when he signs his paintings, since he usually uses a color close to that of the background.
