The life of Mathias Stomer

Mathias Stomer was a 17th-century Flemish painter who was born around 1600 in Antwerp, in the former Spanish Netherlands, and died after 1652. He is best known for his talent in depicting nocturnal scenes, genre scenes and portraits. There are still doubts about his name, and some historians believe his real name could be Stom.

Stomer studied painting in Antwerp, a flourishing city for the arts at the time, before moving to Rome, where he spent much of his artistic career. In Rome, he was influenced by the works of Caravaggio and other Italian Baroque artists, which left its mark on his painting style. Stomer was particularly adept at capturing the play of light and shadow in his paintings, creating the dramatic and mysterious atmospheres characteristic of the Northern schools of the time.

Although the details of his life are sometimes obscure, it is known that Stomer traveled and worked in various European cities, including Naples and Palermo, before returning to Antwerp at the end of his life. His work includes religious scenes, tavern scenes, still lifes and portraits, but it is his treatment of night scenes that most distinguishes him.

Stomer's imprint on his time

Mathias Stomer left behind a significant artistic legacy and continues to be studied and admired for his mastery of light, his realism and his unique style, which blends Caravaggesque realism with elements of the Flemish Baroque period. His works are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.

From his time to the present day, he has been and remains an artist appreciated by collectors the world over. Collectors play an important role in preserving his work, although some of his paintings and drawings are on display in museums in France and around the world.
