Artist's style and technique
Frans le Jeune's work may not be on the same scale as that of great geniuses such as Rubens, but it is nonetheless worthy of special attention. He contributed to the dissemination of an anecdotal genre, genre scenes and religious paintings with a real talent for drawing. His dexterous brushstrokes, limited but present imagination and real penchant for the primacy of color make him not only a great landscape painter, but also an outstanding portraitist with an authentic execution that lends great veracity to his characters. He masters and depicts with panache the details that particularly preoccupy him.
The life of Frans II Francken
Frans II Francken, known as "Le Jeune" (1581 - 1642) was taught from an early age by his father, already renowned for his talent as a painter. He was fortunate enough to visit Italy and closely study the masters of the Venetian school, which enabled him to quickly find his method and break away from the already archaic conventions of Flemish Italianism. He may even have had the opportunity to meet Rubens, who was in Italy at the time. In 1605, at the dawn of his twenty-fourth year, Frans II Francken was also considered Master of the Guild of Saint Luke when he returned to Antwerp from his trip to Italy. Having become the undisputed master of Antwerp, Frans II was elected dean of the guild in 1614. Alongside this title, he painted a famous symbolic coat of arms for the literary association of the violet, which proved a great success. He even maintained close relations with the most renowned artists of his time, including Van Dyck, who painted a portrait of him. His talent also led him to collaborate with another famous Antwerp artist, Jan I Brueghel.
Frans II Francken's imprint on his era
Frans II Francken thus left his mark on the art scene, and remains the best-known artist of the Francken dynasty. At a time when large, monumental altarpieces were in vogue, Frans II Francken made them obsolete by replacing them with more modest formats, and grasped the demands of a new clientele: the bourgeoisie and the nobility.
Recognizing the artist's signature
It's not always easy to identify Frans II Francken's signature. Normally, he signs the canvas with his name and the date the painting was created. You may also recognize his signature if his name is preceded by the word "doiwen".
