Blanche Paymal-Amouroux, a renowned painter

Blanche Paymal-Amouroux (1860-1944), daughter of a lumber merchant, entered the Académie Julian to perfect her artistic technique, and it was under the tutelage of the illustrious painters Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre that her talent was revealed. The Académie Julian is the only (private) academy that accepts and teaches women painters. It is famous for having trained an impressive number of talented painters in the second half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th. Marie Bashkirtseff, the great Russian painter, honed her brush at the Académie Julian.

Artist's style and technique

Most of her paintings evoke the feminine universe, with portraits reminiscent of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Pre-Raphaelitism, echoed in portraits of nymphs, their hair crowned with garlands of flowers. She also depicts women as the subject of genre scenes. Last but not least, she depicts the happy days of childhood, or, conversely, the hardships of child labor, as illustrated by the painting Gamin à la hotte, dated 1892.

How did she mark her era?

In addition to her reputation as a woman painter, Blanche Paymal-Amouroux gained notoriety for her social and political commitment. An advocate of women's rights, she set herself up as a spokeswoman for French suffragists. Through painting, she gave a voice to the most marginalized, such as women, children and workers.

Initially, Blanche Paymal-Amouroux was largely inspired by Impressionism, adopting the subjects and techniques of Monet and Renoir. Nevertheless, as an eclectic artist with an ever-changing spirit of discernment, she gradually moved towards a more singular style, demonstrating through her art her stubbornness. She uses vibrant colors, sometimes acidic, sometimes pastel, and virtuously captures the emotion that emanates from her models, who often display marked facial expressions: a magnanimous, exaggerated smile, mouths wide open or, on the contrary, characters with explicitly melancholic or downcast gazes.

Blanche Paymal-Amouroux thus became a key figure in the process of recognizing women artists in a world where the monopoly of painting belonged exclusively to men. She remains a paragon of virtue for many women artists who follow in her footsteps, boldly cracking the shackles that oppress and constrain the female gender. Her work was repeatedly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, and unanimously acclaimed. She even received an honorable mention in 1898 and was named Officer of Public Instruction in 1905.

Blanche Paymal-Amouroux wasn't just a painter, and that's what makes her so special: she was an activist, a pioneer and gave a voice to women in the art world.

How to recognize the artist's signature?

As a rule, Blanche Paymal-Amouroux signs her works solely with her name, abandoning her first name and adding the date and place of creation.
