Hasagewa's imprint on 19th-century art

The artist imported new techniques to France and Europe, including black etching, and popularized wood engraving, which was not widely used. He was one of the best-known and most appreciated Japanese artists in France at the time. Today, his works continue to appeal to bidders and the public alike.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all Hasagewa's works are signed, especially his drawings and prints. He may sometimes have signed his drawing or print on the frame, which may have disappeared or been changed over the years. This is why the estimate is important.
