Artist Boris Grigoriev's style and technique
Grigoriev was part of the Russian avant-garde, producing works on Futurism. He was far ahead of his time, and a forerunner in the development of contemporary Russian art. His preferred medium remained oil on canvas, although he also produced drawings and prints.
Boris Grigoriev, a major figure in contemporary Russian art
Boris Grigoriev was a Russian-Swedish artist born in Moscow in 1886 of an illegitimate union. His father recognized him at the age of 4 and brought him up in Russia. He says he didn't have a very happy childhood because of his Swedish origins and the fact that he was born out of wedlock in an extremely conservative political and social context.
Art interested him from an early age, and he took courses at the Strogonov School of Fine Arts, then at the St. Petersburg School of Fine Arts. He traveled to Paris, where the 20th century was challenging the academic structures and pictorial processes of contemporary art. He returned to Russia, where he became one of the great representatives of the Russian avant-garde, gaining recognition and teaching. Left-leaning, he was forced to leave Russia clandestinely for Holland. Spending some time in Berlin, he ended his career in Paris. He was acutely aware of his talent, and described himself as a "master of the world", with a sacred life that feared nothing.
At the end of his career, he created a monumental painting for the League of Nations.
He died in 1939 in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
Grigoriev's imprint on his period
Griogoriev left his mark on his era in Russia, France and Europe, although the general public doesn't remember much about him today. Nevertheless, his technical mastery and personal history are of interest to collectors: his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.
Recognizing the Boris Grigoriev signature
Boris Grigoriev's paintings are often signed in the lower left-hand corner. He signs with his first and last name, often in a dark tone; sometimes with the city where he painted the picture, or the date.
