Alfred Roll, forgotten realist

Alfred Philippe Roll (1846-1819) was a French painter who left a lasting impression on his era.

Born in Paris, he studied under Léon Bonnat at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He began by painting landscapes, but his career was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian war, when he served in the army. Inspired by the Bolognese school, his first compositions were romantic - but he soon moved towards realism, following in the footsteps of Gustave Courbet. He exhibited almost all his paintings at the Paris Salon.

Promoted by the French government to official painter of the Third Republic, he immortalized on canvas the centenary of the Estates General and the portrait of President Félix Faure. His studio is located on rue Alphonse de Neuville, which later became rue Alfred Roll.

In 1905, he became President of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

Alfred Roll's imprint on his era

Alfred Roll marked his era with his talent and his pictorial contribution to the state.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a major role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Alfred Roll sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are many copies, so expertise is essential.
