Style and technique of the artist Paul Huet

As part of the Romantic movement, Paul Huet broke with the academic canons of the time. He produced mainly drawings and oils on canvas, but also made prints.

Paul Huet, the forgotten romantic

Paul Huet (1803-1869) was a French painter who left a lasting impression on his era.

He was born in Paris into a family of clothmakers. They were ruined after the revolutionary events. His mother died when he was only seven, and he was placed in a boarding school in Choisy-le-Roi, and continued his education at Henri IV. From an early age, he was fascinated by a Rembrandt etching. He studied with Pierre-Narcisse Guérin and Baron Gros. His apprenticeship did not last very long, as he refused to accept academic rules.

After Rembrandt, he was fascinated by Géricault 's Hunter on Horseback. It was this painting that inspired his series of horsemen, the first major work of his career. He met Eugène Delacroix at the Salon, and were lifelong friends.

In 1823, his father, who had supported his studies, died. As a result, he faced great financial difficulties. He began to paint still lifes to get by.

On a trip to Normandy, he met Richard Parkes Bonington, who taught him Constable's techniques. Following this meeting, he was criticized for imitating English painting. He was seriously ill, but exhibited at the Salon of 1827. Victor Hugo praised the exhibition. In the 1830s, he married his niece and became the official drawing teacher of the Duchesse d'Orléans, although supporters of Ingres criticized him for neglecting this stage of painting.

His career was cut short by the government of the Second Empire, which did not appreciate his work. Théodore Rousseau criticized him, but he continued to paint.

He died in Rue Madame of a pulmonary embolism in 1869.

Paul Huet's influence on his time

Paul Huet marked his era with his talent and non-conformism. Throughout his life, he sought to transgress the conventions of painting and society.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a major role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Paul Huet sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are many copies, so expertise is essential.
