Antonin Mercié mastered the traditional sculptural techniques of bronze and gilded bronze to produce a large number of sculptures in the neoclassical style, which make up the majority of his work.
Antonin Mercié, his life and work
Antonin Mercié (1845-1916), a French sculptor, became an important figure in 19th-century neoclassical sculpture.
Born in Toulouse, he trained in sculpture at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Alexandre Falguière and François Jouffroy.
Inspired by ancient subjects, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1872, after winning the Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1868. His group Gloria Victis was noticed and installed in the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, before moving to the Petit Palais.
He received numerous public commissions and was called upon to create many monuments.
