Théodore Gechter was an early 19th-century artist who produced a number of sculptures in the neoclassical movement. His work is closely linked to war, military figures and animal representations.

Jean François Théodore Gechter, his life and work

Jean François Théodore Gechter (1795-1844), a French artist, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

Born in Paris, he quickly turned to sculpture, becoming a pupil of sculptor François Joseph Bosio and painter Jean Antoine Gros.

He was able to exhibit at the Salon from 1824 onwards, and did so for many years. The sculptor turned to war and military subjects after a ministerial commission to depict the battle of Charles Martel. He subsequently produced a number of subjects linked to the First Empire, such as the Battle of Aboukir.

The artist specializes in small bronze subjects, paying particular attention to the clothing of the individuals depicted. His works are sold throughout Europe.
