Michel François' career

Michel François is a Belgian artist of the 20th and 19th centuries. He was born in 1956 in Saint Trond, Belgium, into a family of artists. He decided to follow the same path and graduated from the École de Recherche Graphique in Brussels. He launched his career at the age of 25, in the early 1980s, and went on to exhibit all over the world. He gained recognition thanks to major contemporary art events, such as the Venice Biennale, which enabled him to be seen by the greatest contemporary art critics and collectors.

In 2009, the Institut d'Art Contemporain devoted a personal retrospective to his work. He will also be exhibiting at the CRAC Occitanie and presenting his drawings and prints at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he has also been teaching since 2009.

He uses a variety of media, from photography to sculpture, his preferred means of expression, and printmaking. For him, the choice of medium is of little importance, as long as he favors a sensual approach to art, and describes sculpture as "a middle ground between dance and painting". His work is an ongoing experiment in fragility and resistance.

He favors a certain dynamism in his works, with movement playing a central role.

His 2005 work À l'arrachée - Instant gratification is influenced byYves Klein, who also used gold-leaf collage on a monochrome painting.

The artist's works and style

Michel François stands out for his innovative approach to art and the theories he brings to it, training a new generation of young artists. His works are prized at auction and sought after by collectors in all media.

Today, private collectors play a major role in preserving his material works, although some of them are exhibited in museums around the world.
